LOUISVILLE (February 26, 2023) – Junior and senior men’s apparatus champions were named Sunday, and six more gymnasts claimed National Team spots as USA Gymnastics’ Winter Cup competition concluded at Freedom Hall.
Senior men won apparatus titles by combining scores earned in Friday’s all-around with Sunday’s apparatus competition.
Stanford University’s Curran Phillips (Naperville, Ill.) claimed two titles, winning on parallel bars with a 32.094 (15.997; 16.097) and horizontal bar with a 27.350 (13.700; 13.650). Kameron Nelson (Evans, Ga./Ohio State University) also did double duty as a winner, topping the podium on floor with a 27.878 (14.114; 13.764) and vault with a 29.004 (14.302; 14.702). Ian Skirkey (Pepperell, Mass./University of Illinois) posted an impressive 30.944 (14.972; 15.972) to secure the pommel horse title while Alex Diab (Glen Ellyn, Ill./EVO Gymnastics) took home still rings gold with a 29.496 (14.698; 14.798).
Taylor Christopulos (Layton, Utah/University of Nebraska), Joshua Karnes (Erie, Pa./Penn State University), Riley Loos (Folsom, Calif./Stanford University), Phillips and Nelson each earned automatic selection to the Senior Men’s National Team as the top five athletes by rank order from the 10-point program that combined their performances on both days of Winter Cup. Skirkey took a sixth spot by meeting the individual event (IE) benchmarks on pommel horse, winning the event and achieving a D score that met or exceeded the top 3 highest ranked D scores from the 2022 World Championships Individual Event Finals. The full Men’s Senior National Team will be announced later this evening.
Seven junior men in each apparatus from Saturday’s Elite Team Cup advanced to Sunday’s competition, with Sunday performances determining the winners. Topping the podium for junior men were Region 8’s Garret Schooley (Sarasota, Fla./EVO Gymnastics) on pommel horse (12.500), floor (13.876) and vault (15.066); Region 9’s Ty Jordan (Morrison, Colo./5280 Gymnastics) on rings (13.876), Region 3’s Caden Clinton (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Academy of Gymnastics) on parallel bars (13.588) and Region 5’s Kai Uemura (Chicago, Ill.) on high bar (13.940).
