NORMAN, Okla., April 16, 2022 – The Stanford Cardinal put the exclamation point on their third-straight NCAA men’s gymnastics team title Saturday at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla., eclipsing the runner-up Oklahoma Sooners by more than nine points. The Michigan Wolverines, led by all-around champion Paul Juda (junior, Deerfield, Ill.), were third.
Stanford posted a cumulative 423.628 to cap a near-perfect season in which the Cardinal were bested only once. Oklahoma (414.555) clipped Michigan (414.490) by less than a tenth of a point for the second spot. Nebraska (406.453), Ohio State (399.326) and Illinois (398.523) rounded out the field.
Juda posted a 15.000 on vault in the final rotation to secure both the all-around and vault titles. Juda’s 85.298 just edged two-time all-around champion Brody Malone (senior, Belfast, Tenn.) out of the top spot. Malone finished with an 84.733, picking up the national championship on horizontal bar (14.700) – an event for which he earned bronze at the 2021 World Championships – in the process. Oklahoma’s Raydel Gamboa (freshman, Phoenix. Ariz.) was third in the all-around with an 83.398.
Three of Malone’s Stanford teammates added event titles of their own Saturday. Curran Phillips (senior, Naperville, Ill.) led the way on parallel bars with a 15.233. Riley Loos (junior, El Dorado Hills, Calif.) topped the scoresheet on still rings with a 14.600, and Bryan Perla (senior, West Boylston, Mass.) earned a meet-high 14.800 on floor exercise. Penn State’s Chase Clingman (junior, Leesburg, Va.) took top honors on pommel horse with a 14.000.
