Summary Description
USA Gymnastics’ Safe Sport department is committed to the safety of participants. USA Gymnastics’ Safe Sport department creates and provides policies and education to support athlete safety for all stakeholders. The department supports all members in implementing the policies with resources and best practices and facilitates the grievance process when it is believed that Safe Sport policies have been violated.

In this role, the Lead Investigator will coordinate and direct investigations into Safe Sport Reports. The Lead Investigator oversees the team of investigators and conducts investigations. The Lead Investigator manages the case management system and makes administrative changes to the system as necessary. The Lead Investigator is a key member of the Safe Sport team and participates in group review of cases, lending expertise to discussions.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Lead Investigator will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining confidentiality of USA Gymnastics’ Safe Sport cases throughout the process as needed including but not limited to, with the media, witnesses and case parties (when requested) and USA Gymnastics’ staff and leadership outside of the Safe Sport department
  • Developing and/or modifying standard operating procedures to improve processes and efficiency of investigations
  • Oversight and direction of investigators including assigning cases through the case management portal, monitoring case load for each investigator, directing investigations as needed and providing insight on further lines of inquiry
  • Conducting investigations using proven investigative techniques appropriate for administrative investigations
  • Managing requests for information on ongoing investigations made by parties to the case with excellent customer service skills while maintaining any necessary confidentiality
  • Maintaining detailed documentation and records of cases using the case management system
  • Providing review of investigations submitted by investigators and direction on further inquiry as needed
  • Training new investigators as needed, as well as ongoing development to ensure best practices
  • Conducting regularly scheduled meetings with investigators to identify common issues and new patterns in investigations
  • Providing administrative oversight of the case management system, interfacing with the software developers as needed to implement changes
  • Presenting verbal case reviews in a concise yet thorough manner to the Safe Sport team for determination on case resolution
  • Lending expertise to the USA Gymnastics Safe Sport team members through understanding of investigative techniques and witness and respondent behavior
  • Recognizing the need for urgent communication with department leadership as needed to escalate a case, provide information that necessitates an urgent response or alert leadership to some other cause for concern

  • Knowledge of proper interview techniques appropriate for administrative investigations

  • Strong leadership skills, with ability to oversee several team members and help them grow professionally
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present cases to the Safe Sport team in a concise, yet thorough manner

  • Ability to proactively problem solve, and maintain a positive “can do” attitude under stress
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to tackle problems effectively and independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-starter who will take initiative with new projects and work with a variety of people
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice field preferred
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in investigations with supervisory experience preferred
  • Law enforcement or Dept. of Child Services investigator experience preferred
  • Experience in trauma-informed interviewing techniques
  • Experience in child abuse and forensic interviewing
Other Information
  • Must pass a background check and complete SafeSport training
  • Position is based in Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Salary and benefits commensurate with experience
  • Weekend work as needed to conduct investigations and minimal travel will be required
