Summary Description
Reporting directly to the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer, the Communications Manager will help lead the organization’s communications strategy and play a pivotal role in media, public relations, and overall communications efforts. The position will manage the day-to-day news monitoring efforts and assist with all media/public relations needs for the organization.


    Media and Public Relations
    • Serve as a media contact for USA Gymnastics
    • Write press releases, website stories, and other media/external facing materials
    • Proofread releases, web stories and articles, as well as other documents as needed
    • Manage event announcements, event results, personnel updates, general organization announcements
    • Handle media calls, fulfill media requests, arrange interviews, pitch stories, etc.
    • Manage media-related content on website; media distribution lists; manage media monitoring for USA Gymnastics and events
    • Assist the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, International Gymnastics Federation, other National Governing Bodies, and additional stakeholders as needed with media related requests
    Press Operations for Events
    • Handle media credentialing and assist with media operations planning
    • Generate event-related materials; pitch; coordinate and manage conference calls with athletes
    • Work with onsite media with questions, access, etc.
    Internal Communications
    • Provide support in development and execution of internal communications processes and messaging
    Cross Functional Work
    • Work closely with the content and new media team to ensure alignment in messaging
    • Assist with content and new media needs as needed
Requirements and Competencies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; working knowledge of AP style, grammar
  • Shown success building and maintaining trusted media relationships
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and social media platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with all functional units of an organization
  • Cultural and global awareness
  • Experience providing content for media, website, social media
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to tackle problems effectively and independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to pro-actively problem solve
  • Ability to maintain a positive “can do” attitude under stress
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work weekends/holidays
  • Ability to multi-task; take initiative; be deadline-oriented; maintain confidentiality and work both as part of a team and independently
  • Experience with gymnastics preferred
Education and Experience
  • Bachelors degree, with a major in journalism, communications, public relations or similar area of study
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience needed
Other Information
  • Position is located in Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Salary and benefits commensurate with experience
  • Weekend work and extensive travel at times will be required
