Summary Description:
The Director of Sports Medicine is a senior member of the USA Gymnastics staff, reporting to the Chief Programs Officer. The primary responsibility of the Director of Sports Medicine is to develop and execute the strategy for the consistent provision of the highest quality medical and athletic training services to all five disciplines within USA Gymnastics. In performing this role, he/she will identify and build a top quality team comprised of multiple resources both within and outside of USA Gymnastics. The Director of Sports Medicine will also serve as the primary liaison for USA Gymnastics with the USOC, USADA and other agencies, committees, or organizations on matters related to health and wellness of athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development of a top quality team of medical professionals including MDs, athletic trainers and physical therapists, that will provide continuity of the highest quality care for all five USA Gymnastics disciplines. This team will necessarily be comprised of both internal and external contracted resources, and the Director of Sports Medicine must develop and execute a strategy to use diverse resources to achieve the highest standards of consistent care.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance by all medical and training personnel with all Safe Sport policies and procedures.
  • Oversee contract compliance, insurance and credential verification for all providers.
  • Maintain appropriate records in full compliance with all requirements of HIPAA and related privacy laws.
  • Monitor and advise Program Directors and other USA Gymnastics staff on developments in sports medicine protocols including concussion, cardiac, and other, as they relate to gymnastics. Develop and/or otherwise source appropriate communications for USA Gymnastics membership on sports medicine related issues including concussion and other types of injury.
  • Monitor and advise on matters related to USADA, including prohibited substances and testing.
  • Serve as primary liaison with the USOC on all matters related to sports medicine within USA Gymnastics.
  • Manage the Sports Medicine program budget to ensure effective use of all resources.

Requirements/Competencies:

  • Exceptional organizational skills and demonstrated ability to successfully oversee multiple works streams at one time.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and managing teams of medical and/or athletic training providers.
  • Proven ability to think strategically about health care services for athletes, and develop and execute operational plans that deliver quality, consistent care and maximize budgetary efficiency.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to work closely with multiple stakeholders including program directors, athletes, care providers, and external entities including the USOC.
  • Knowledgeable about HIPAA and related privacy laws.
  • Knowledgeable about the licensing and other accreditation laws and requirements for physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists.
  • Knowledgeable about the Safe Sport movement and the requirements of Safe Sport policies.
  • Knowledgeable about USADA, prohibited substances, testing and related matters.
  • Great attitude, strong work ethic and commitment to helping athletes develop at every level.

Education and Experience

  • Masters or Doctoral degree in exercise science, epidemiology, athletic training, or a related field, or MD/DO with special qualification in sports medicine required. Active BOC certification as an athletic trainer (i.e., ATC) preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years, experience in sports science medicine or a related field, with at least 3 years of focus on youth sports; experience with gymnastics or similar sports preferred.

  • Significant domestic and international travel required
  • Position is in Indianapolis, Indiana. Remote working arrangement may be considered for exceptional candidates.
